Freebie Friday #20

Today’s Friday free design is again a brand new design, never published before.

But since this design will most likely become part of some collection in the future, it will only be available for a limited time — so don’t wait too long to download it.

It’s an appliqué made with the so-called bean stitchThis type of applique is faster than the one with satin stitches outlines. It works well with non-fraying fabrics and knits, or, on the other hand, when you actually want frayed edges as a decorative element — in that case, you’d use cotton fabric.

This type of applique requires more precision when trimming the edges, because no imperfection can hide under covering zig-zag stitches. To trim the edges neatly, you’ll need sharp, high-quality scissors, ideally the curved ones. It’s also important to keep the trimming distance from the stitched edge even, as any mistake will be noticeable.

If you like this little bunny, you can download it by clicking on the image below.

Recently I created a similar appliqué as an exclusive freebie for the OPW Mall MOC club. As you can see, I used fleece, which works beautifully for these projects. Its fluffy surface adds a lovely 3D effect to the embroidery — kids absolutely love this type of appliqué. You can also use minky, baby plush, wellsoft, and similar furry fabrics. Just don’t forget to place a water-soluble foil on top while stitching; otherwise, the stitches will sink into the pile or loops of the fabric and the embroidery won’t look nice.

And one last tip: for fraying cotton fabrics, you can use iron-on adhesive backing like Heat’n Bond. That way even these fabrics won’t fray, because the fusible layer will lock the fibers in place.

Enjoy the design and until next time Happy Embroidering!
